Did you know that the first mayor of Atlanta was also its first saloon keeper? Moses W. Formwalt won his 1848 election for the Free and Rowdy Party in opposition to the Moral Party. Ron Smith and Mary O. Boyle have written an account of our city's complicated relationship with alcohol, Atlanta Beer: A Heady History Of Brewing In The Hub Of The South.
